For 4 people
  • 1 level tablespoon Mortimer Chocolate Powder
  • 450g diced stewing beef
  • 1 large onion chopped
  • 2 carrots sliced
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 1 bottle of beer (33cl)
  • Grated rind and juice of 1 orange
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon powdered allspice

Method

Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a frying pan over a high heat, add the beef and brown.

In a flameproof casserole add the other tablespoon of oil.   Over a medium heat soften the onion.

Add the meat to the onion together with the carrot, beer, chocolate powder, orange, spices, salt and pepper.

Bring it up to simmering point, place the lid on the casserole and place in the oven set at 130oC.

Cook for 2 ½ hours.

Bake some jacket potatoes at the same time and serve with a green vegetable.

A rich warming casserole that fills the kitchen with a mouth watering aroma.
